Alun Thomas

Dr Alun Thomas is Lecturer in Modern Russian History at NTU.

His current research relates to the treatment of nomadic peoples in Soviet Central Asia from 1920-1934. This period was both post-colonial and imperial, in that the old power structures of the Tsar were swept away even as a new Soviet governing apparatus was put into place. Alun is interested in the interaction between an explicitly anti-imperial political revolution, the legacies of European colonialism, and a programme of economic and social modernisation which had no place for nomads.
